Water Funds are financial and institutional mechanisms that promotes public and private sector participation for the conservation of watersheds to improve urban water security through nature-based solutions. They may channel long-term investment for conservation projects in a way to maximize seepage and reduce sediments and other pollutants of water flows that supply cities. They strengthen watershed governance by bringing together relevant stakeholders –users, water utilities, corporations, authorities and civil society– and providing solid scientific knowhow to facilitate the decision-making process. This session will present Water Funds mechanisms and discuss their applications, focusing in good experiences and learned lessons. Conditions to replicate the experience at other locations will be discussed also.
